medishift

The team chat app for practices, wards and care teams instead of WhatsApp groups

With the medishift team chat app, your team messages each other directly, in groups and in one group for everyone, whether in a GP surgery, across branch sites, on a hospital ward, in a care home or out on domiciliary care visits. It sits in the same account as your rota, on the phone and at the desk.

  • Every active member of staff is automatically in the Whole practice group
  • Only the people in a direct message can read it, not even the partners or admins
  • Nobody has to hand their personal mobile number to a work group

What the team chat does for your team

  1. For everyone

One group for the whole practice

Every active member of staff joins automatically, and nobody can leave it, only mute it. This is where the announcements go, from Wednesday's fire safety training to the opening hours over the bank holiday, and nobody is missing from the list.

    • New starters are in without anyone adding them
    • Muted, @mentions still get through
  2. For teams

Groups for reception, the nurses or the branch surgery

Partners and admins create groups, open for anyone to join or closed. Add members one by one or a whole work area at once. Whoever joins later can scroll back through the history.

    • Open and closed groups
    • Add a whole work area in one go
  3. One to one

    Direct messages to any colleague

Message anyone active in the practice directly, including colleagues at the branch site. Only the people in the conversation can read it. Partners and admins cannot see into anyone else's direct messages.

    • Across sites too
    • Online status in direct messages
  4. Targeted

    Mention, quote, react

An @mention reaches exactly the person it concerns, even if they have muted the group. Replying with a quote keeps the thread together, and a single reaction saves the tenth "ok" of the morning.

    • Messages up to 4,000 characters, with links
    • Edit and delete your own messages
  5. Peace of mind

See whether the message has landed

In direct messages, read receipts show whether a message was sent, delivered or read. In the app every new message arrives as a push notification, so a 7am message asking who can cover a sick receptionist does not sit there unseen.

    • Sent, delivered, read
    • Push notifications in the app

Before and after

Running the team on WhatsApp groups

  • The practice group runs on personal mobile numbers, including whoever started last Monday.
  • Someone has to add every new starter to every group by hand.
  • Work messages sit between family chats and holiday photos.
  • People who left the practice months ago are often still reading along.
  • The rota lives somewhere else, so every swap request starts with a screenshot.

With the medishift team chat app

  • Messages live in the practice's account, and personal numbers stay personal.
  • Every active member of staff is automatically in the Whole practice group.
  • Work stays in the work app, and chats can be muted once you have gone home.
  • Partners and admins create groups, open or closed.
  • Rota, leave and chat sit in the same app.

Who is the team chat app for?

  • GP and specialist practices

Reception, the nursing team and the GPs sort things out without shouting down the corridor or sticking notes to a monitor.

  • Practices with branch surgeries

Direct messages reach the branch site too, and each site gets its own group.

  • Hospitals and clinics

Each ward and department gets its own group. Whoever comes on for the late shift reads what changed organisationally during the early shift.

  • Care homes and domiciliary care

Between two visits or on the floor: last-minute changes reach the team in the app, and nobody needs a colleague's personal mobile number.

The team chat app on every phone in the team

In the medishift app, chat has its own section next to the rota, absences and time tracking. New messages arrive as push notifications, and whoever has finished for the day can mute individual chats.

  • Push notifications for new messages, in the app.
  • Mute chat by chat, @mentions still get through.
  • In the browser the same chat sits in the sidebar.

Chat and rota in one app

The question of who can cover Thursday afternoon starts in the chat, and the answer is on the rota. In medishift both sit in the same account, and your team sees the published week in the same app they message in.

  • Published shifts everyone can see on their phone.
  • Double bookings and absences are flagged while you plan.
  • Free for up to 10 staff.

Annual leave that does not vanish in the chat history

Booking leave by message sounds easy, until the request disappears between two questions about the flu vaccine delivery. In medishift your team requests annual leave in the app, you approve it there, and the chat stays free for everything else.

  • Requests made and approved in the app.
  • Team calendar shows who is off and when.
  • Leave balance with carry-over from last year.

Questions about the team chat app

The medishift team chat app is a messenger for the staff of GP practices, hospitals and care providers: direct messages, groups by work area and one group for every active member of staff, in the browser and in the app for iOS and Android. It sits in the same account as the rota and annual leave, and replaces WhatsApp groups on personal phones.

Direct messages and groups are included in the free version for up to 10 staff. On the free version, chat history is deleted after 90 days. Images, files and unlimited history come with the paid plans, and the pricing page has the details.

No. Only the two people in a direct message can read it. Partners and admins create groups and manage who is in them, but they cannot see into anyone else's direct messages.

Anyone who is an active member of staff in your account is automatically in the Whole practice group and can be messaged directly. You add them to other groups, or they join an open group themselves and can read its history.

Everyone can mute individual chats, including the Whole practice group. Push notifications only come through the app. Anyone who is @mentioned is still notified, so anything urgent gets through.

Like all data in medishift, on servers in Germany, in line with GDPR. That is the point of a staff communication app run by the practice: work messages sit in your practice's account, not in personal messengers on your team's phones.

It is a team messaging app for your staff, built for talking to each other. There are no video or voice calls, you cannot message patients or anyone outside the practice, and the chat is hidden on a shared device set up for clocking in.

In the team chat, people message people. Kira is medishift's AI assistant, which partners and admins give tasks to, such as creating shifts or entering absences. For them, Kira is pinned at the top of the chat list.

No. The chat is part of the medishift app for iOS and Android, where your team also sees the rota and their leave. At the desk, you open it in the browser from the sidebar.

Yes. You can set up groups by work area, for example one per ward, unit or care team, and add a whole work area as members in one go. Staff on shift or out on visits read and reply in the app.

No. It is built for coordinating your own team: shifts, cover and announcements. It does not send messages to other organisations such as hospitals, pharmacies or other practices, and it is not a channel for patients.
